My Favorite Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima: 7 Places I Actually Recommend

Ask ten locals where to eat Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, and you’ll probably get ten different answers.

That’s because there isn’t just one “best” restaurant. Every shop has its own personality—from the type of noodles it uses and how they’re cooked, to the sweetness of the cabbage, the sauce, and even the atmosphere.

After years of living in Hiroshima, these are the places I personally recommend to friends visiting the city. Rather than chasing famous names, I’ve chosen restaurants that each offer something memorable.

1. Goichi (五一)

For carefully selected ingredients and perfect balance

If I had to recommend just one restaurant, Goichi would always be near the top of my list.

What makes Goichi special is its attention to every ingredient. The okonomiyaki is slowly cooked on a thick iron griddle at a lower temperature, allowing the cabbage to develop a wonderful natural sweetness without losing its freshness.

The noodles are just as impressive. While many restaurants use pre-steamed noodles, Goichi uses fresh noodles from the long-established Harada Seimen and boils them before they reach the teppan, giving them a wonderfully fresh texture and flavor.

The final touch is surprisingly light. Instead of relying heavily on pork back fat, Goichi finishes its okonomiyaki with vegetable oil, creating a clean, balanced taste that never feels too heavy.

It isn’t the flashiest okonomiyaki in Hiroshima—but it’s one of the best places to discover just how refined Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki can be.

Local Tip: Don’t go straight to the okonomiyaki. Order a few teppanyaki dishes first. Before opening Goichi, the owner ran an izakaya, and that experience shows in the excellent side dishes.

Good to know: Goichi is popular, and because each okonomiyaki is cooked slowly, waiting times can be longer than at many other restaurants. If it’s full or closed, I’d recommend Tamaya (No. 4 on this list)—it’s just a short walk away and another excellent choice.

2. Ron (ロン) – Okonomi-mura

For fun toppings and an energetic atmosphere

If it’s your first visit to Hiroshima, you’ll probably hear about Okonomi-mura, a famous building filled with dozens of okonomiyaki restaurants. It’s one of the city’s best-known destinations for trying Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

Inside, Ron is my favorite.

The atmosphere is lively, the staff are used to international visitors, and you’ll find playful menu options that go beyond the traditional recipe. It’s a great place if you’re traveling with friends or family and want dinner to be part of the entertainment.

3. Goku (悟空)

For crispy noodles

Everyone has their own preference when it comes to noodles.

If you like them thin and extra crispy, Goku is hard to beat.

The outside develops a satisfying crunch while the inside stays light, creating a texture that’s very different from softer Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

Don’t be in a hurry. Goku is known for its thin, crispy noodles, achieved by carefully grilling steamed noodles on the teppan. It’s a popular spot, so waiting is common—but that’s part of the experience.

One thing I especially like about Goku is that it still tastes great even after it has cooled down. The crispy noodles hold their texture surprisingly well, which is why it’s one of my favorite places to order from on Uber Eats when I’m craving okonomiyaki at home.

4. Tamaya (玉家)

For the full teppan experience

Most okonomiyaki restaurants in Hiroshima cook your meal on a large iron griddle in front of you.

However, if you’re seated at a regular table, it’s often served on a plate. While it’s still delicious, it gradually cools down, and the texture changes as you eat.

Tamaya is different.

Even the table seats are fitted with their own teppan (iron griddle), so your okonomiyaki stays hot from the first bite to the last. The cabbage remains sweet and juicy, the noodles keep their texture, and every bite tastes as if it has just come off the grill.

One of my favorite memories here is bringing my friend Peter Gessner, a German theatre director based in Japan. He kept saying, “I’m not that hungry—I don’t think I can finish a whole okonomiyaki.” But after his first bite, he ended up finishing the entire thing with a smile.

If you want to experience Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki the way many locals believe it should be enjoyed, Tamaya is one of the best places to do it.

5. Hassho Nagarekawa (八昌 流川店)

For a late-night classic

Sometimes you simply want great okonomiyaki after a night out.

Hassho in Nagarekawa is one of those dependable places. It’s open later than many other restaurants, making it perfect after exploring Hiroshima’s nightlife.

Expect to wait during busy hours—but that’s usually a good sign.

Confession: I usually end up here after a long night of eating and drinking with friends. Somehow, I never remember to take a photo… or even remember much about the walk there! I’ll make sure to update this article with one next time. 😄

6. Umaimon-ya Ichinari (うまいもん屋 いちなり)

For a hidden late-night surprise

I’d like to recommend one more late-night okonomiyaki spot.

I actually found Ichinari by chance while out drinking with my dad one evening. We’d walked past it many times before, but neither of us had ever gone inside. It has the kind of atmosphere that can feel a little intimidating—even for locals.

When we finally decided to give it a try, we were both genuinely surprised.

The okonomiyaki was excellent.

In fact, I think their most basic okonomiyaki might be the best thing on the menu. If you’re visiting for the first time, order the classic Pork, Egg & Soba (豚玉そば / Butatama Soba). Sometimes simple really is best.

One thing to know before you go: every guest is expected to order at least one drink.

Also, don’t expect much English support. You may need to rely on a translation app—but don’t let that stop you.

The restaurant stays open until 3:00 a.m., making it a fantastic choice if you’re craving Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki after a night out.

7. Near Hiroshima Station?

Don’t overthink it.

If you’re staying near Hiroshima Station and don’t want to travel across the city, head to the Ekimae Hiroba (Okonomiyaki Plaza) across from the station. You’ll find multiple restaurants serving solid Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, making it an easy choice before catching a train. Another convenient option inside Hiroshima Station is Rei-chan Hiroshima.

One More Tip: Order Teppanyaki First

Here’s something many visitors don’t know.

Locals often don’t order okonomiyaki immediately.

Instead, they start with a few teppanyaki dishes—grilled oysters, squid, beef, mushrooms, or vegetables—while enjoying a beer or sake.

Only after that comes the main event: the okonomiyaki.

Taking your time this way turns dinner into a much more local experience.

Final Thoughts

There is no single “best” okonomiyaki restaurant in Hiroshima.

The best one depends on what you’re looking for:

  • Goichi — for carefully selected ingredients, fresh noodles, and beautifully balanced flavors.
  • Ron — for a lively atmosphere and a fun first experience inside Okonomi-mura.
  • Goku — for wonderfully thin, crispy noodles that stay delicious even after they’ve cooled.
  • Tamaya — for enjoying your okonomiyaki the local way, served on a teppan right at your table.
  • Hassho Nagarekawa — for a dependable late-night meal after exploring Hiroshima’s nightlife.
  • Umaimon-ya Ichinari — for a hidden local gem that’s worth stepping into, even if it looks a little intimidating at first.
  • Ekimae Hiroba — for a convenient and reliable choice if you’re staying near Hiroshima Station.

Whichever you choose, don’t rush.

Sit at the counter if you can, watch the chef prepare your meal, order a few teppanyaki dishes before your okonomiyaki, and enjoy one of Hiroshima’s greatest food traditions.

But between us… my favorite okonomiyaki in the world isn’t served in any restaurant. It’s the one my dad makes at home. 😊

If you ever find yourself in Hiroshima and we’re both free, my dad and I would be more than happy to invite you over and share one with you.

Who knows? It might become your favorite too.

Home is where my favorite Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is made. ❤️
